Unity is a non-demoninational Christian church providing a positive, practical and progressive approach to Christianity. This video discusses the roots of Unity and its teaching and discusses the different streams of thought that contributed to the creation of the Unity Movement.
There is only One God, and many paths that lead to God" New Thought is an umbrella term for several different movements, Unity being one of these. New Thought often included movements that had the word 'Science' in the title. In the late 1800's and early 1900's there was an growing attempt to combine religion with science, and the science of thought. There were movements such as Christian Science, Divine Science and Religious Science, and there were many other Churches and organizations that evolved out of the late 1800's and early 1900's.
Unity is considered a progressive branch of New Thought and it had its beginning in the late 1800's. In Unity, much of the emphasis is placed around the teaching of the power of thought and the energies behind our ideas and beliefs. Positive thinking is also important in Unity.
New Thought Unity also expresses that: the Divine Mind of God is everywhere and indwells within us; that the Mind of God is intelligent, and the nature of God is Good and Omnipresent; that there is One Power and One Presence and that separation is the cause of much suffering, and evil is merely the absence of Good in the same way that darkness is the absence of Light; that God is Oneness and Love and we can experience the Divine directly through prayer and meditation; that thought is a creative force and consciousness creates our reality; and that there is One Truth and One God, but many paths to It.
New thought does not mean that there is entirely new teachings, but rather, it is adding a new thought to an old rigid line of thought that existed since the late 1800's and re-introducing it to the mainstream. Much of the early New Thought had been influenced by the teachings and texts from many different eastern philosophies and traditions; it became a blending of eastern and western thought. New Thought is ancient wisdom expressed in a new way.
