About New Thought Author Joseph Murphy

Joseph Murphy was an Irish born, naturalised American author, and New Thought minister, ordained in Divine Science and Religious Science. He was also a world renowned authority on mysticism and mind dynamics. Murphy was born in Ireland; he was the son of a private boy's school headmaster and was raised a Roman Catholic. Early in hsi life, he studied for the priesthood and joined the Jesuits. In his twenties, Murphy had an profound personal experience with healing prayer which led him to leave the Jesuits and move to the United States. He moved to New York and began working as a pharmacist, having a degree in Chemistry at the time. It was here that he attended the Church of the Healing Christ, which was also part of the Church of Divine Science.

In the mid 1940's, Murphy moved to Los Angeles, where he met Religious Science founder Ernest Holmes. He was ordained by Holmes into the Religious Science in 1946. Afterwards he started teaching at Rochester, New York, and later at the Institute of Religious Science in Los Angeles. After a meeting with Divine Science Association president, Erwin Gregg, he became re-ordained into Divine Science. In 1949, Murphy would became the minister of the Los Angeles Divine Science Church for the next 28 years. Between 1300-1500 people would attend his powerful lectures every Sunday. Murphy built the church into one of the largest New Thought congregations in the country at the time. He also had a daily radio program during the time which became immendely popular.

Over the next 10 years, Joseph Murphy got married, earned a PhD in psychology from the University of Southern California, and began his writing career. He would go on to author more than 30 books on various subjects related to new thought, metaphysics and the religious and mental sciences. Murphy taught the simple, scientifically proven techniques and astonishing facts about how the powers of the subconscious mind can preform miracles of healing and attract perfect health, prosperity, happiness and peace of mind.

After the death of his first wife in 1976, Murphy got married again to a fellow Divine Science minister who became his longstanding secretary. Murphy moved his ministry to Laguna Hills, California where he spent the last days of his life. His wife, Dr. Jean Murphy, continued with Joseph's ministry for many years after his death. Dr. Joseph Murphy had a passion for the Truth and still remains a beacon of enlightenment and inspiration to this day.
